Should I Eat Before Exercise?

I know this can be really confusing for many women, especially because we have been brainwashed to believe that 'fasted cardio' is the answer to our weight gain woes. The thing is, if you are already stressed, which you likely are when your hormones are in flux, adding fasting to the pile is the wrong solution for you.

WHAT IS THE SOLUTION?

If you're exercising hard first thing in the morning before breakfast, you need to eat something small to break the fast and lower your stress hormone response. I know a lot of you will say that you find it hard to eat first thing, but a small amount of protein and carbohydrates is going to fuel your muscles and make your workout more effective along with buffering the stress effects of exercise. If you are going for a light stroll the stress effects are not as heavy as hard intervals, but something small to eat can still benefit your stress hormone levels.

Think 130 calories and a mix of protein and carbohydrates.

IDEAS

  • 1/2 slice of bread with tsp peanut butter

  • A small glass of milk

  • 1/2 a boiled egg and 1/2 an apple

START SMALL

If you are not used to eating before exercise start small until you find the right balance for you. Eat as early as you can before the session to avoid feeling nauseous or food returning to visit.

YOUR IDEAS

Tell me what you like to eat as your early morning pre-workout snack?
